Umno will not compromise on issues related to race, religion, and royalty, even with friends, said party youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh.
ADSTaking to social media, he pointed to the constitutionally enshrined rights of the Conference of Rulers and Islam’s position as the federal religion.
“If defending Islam and Malays as enshrined in the Constitution causes you not to want to support Umno, go ahead, we don’t care!!
“This is a country where the federal religion is Islam and the rights of the Malays are enshrined in its Constitution, so please respect that before you want us to respect you!” he said.
Attached to his Facebook post was a Malaysiakini report on United for the Rights of Malaysians Party (Urimai) pro-tem chairperson P Ramasamy, who said Umno’s dominance in ethnicity and religion caused BN members MCA and MIC to experience declining support among minorities.
Urimai pro-tem chairperson P RamasamyThis came after Umno supreme council member Puad Zarkashi told MCA to remain a loyal partner within BN, adding that frustrations voiced by its leadership should not lead to misplaced blame or withdrawal from the coalition.
On April 28, MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon urged his party to take charge of its future if BN continues to delay making clear decisions regarding its direction.
Chong said MCA had already given BN more than two years to recalibrate after the 15th general election, but the coalition’s ongoing indecision has left MCA members frustrated and uncertain.
Despite MCA’s decades of loyalty as a core member of BN, Chong noted that the party has been repeatedly sidelined.
Puad expressed his sympathy with MCA’s concerns, but said it should not blame BN.
He further questioned why the Chinese-based party had won only two seats in the last general election, saying that its poor electoral performance had no connection to BN’s cooperation with Pakatan Harapan.
BN began working with former rivals Harapan after GE15, which resulted in a hung parliament. - Mkini
