Akmal Sees Red Over Kk Mart S Ham Sandwich Recalls Old Wound
Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh is seeing red over the ham sandwich being sold at a KK Mart outlet in Universiti Malaya.
Reminding the supermarket chain that the “old wound” over the socks controversy has yet to heal, he questioned the halal certification for the sandwich.
In a video posted on Facebook, the Merlimau assemblyperson said that ham is associated with pork.
“... Okaylah, maybe it is sold for the non-Muslims, this can still be accepted. But look behind the package, there is a halal logo.
“I want to ask KK Mart, since when is ham considered halal and how did this product obtain the halal certification?” he added.
When pointed out that there is also chicken and turkey ham, the Umno Youth leader told Malaysiakini that according to the requirements, the halal logo must specify this but it was not done.
“People are not upset that you are selling ham, people are upset about the halal logo.
“So I call on Jakim (Islamic Development Department) to clarify if the halal logo for the sandwich is genuine or otherwise,” he added.
‘Belittling Islam’
Akmal urged the police and relevant agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and take appropriate action.
“For us Muslims, this is not the first time. This is the second time. Enough of them belittling our religion,” he added.
On Saturday, UM ordered the immediate closure of two KK Mart outlets on its campus over the sandwich packs.
UM said this was following concerns over the product’s halal labelling and to ensure investigations could proceed without interference.
“It was found that the sandwich product packs labelled ‘ham and cheese sandwich’ and the usage of halal logo on the product in the stores were doubtful.
“As such, the premises will be closed until further notice,” it said. - Mkini
