PETALING JAYA: DAP vice-chairman Nga Kor Ming has waded into the controversy that has arisen over chicken ham and cheese sandwiches sold on Universiti Malaya’s campus, after the halal logo was allegedly misused on the pre-packed sandwiches.
Nga took a jab at certain quarters whom he accused of making a fuss over the matter, saying ham simply referred to meat that had been cured.
“We have turkey ham and chicken ham, which are perfect for consumption. The same goes to root beer, which is made from sassafras root which is non-alcoholic and good to drink.
“To make an issue out of it simply shows who is the real idiot,” he said in a posting on X.
Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh had questioned the halal certification for the sandwich and cited the previous controversy involving the sale of “Allah” socks by KK Mart.
Akmal was criticised by MCA vice-president Wee Jeck Seng and DAP Youth chief Woo Kah Leong, with the former urging his Barisan Nasional colleague to refrain from politicising the issue.
Akmal fired back, saying the offence of misusing the halal logo was serious and had profound implications for Muslims.
PKR central leadership council member Fahmi Zainol also defended Akmal, saying the Umno Youth chief’s strong criticism had nothing to do with political mileage, but was about respecting the sanctity of Islam.
Yesterday, KK Mart said it had suspended all business dealings with the supplier of the pre-packed sandwiches sold at one of its outlets at Universiti Malaya after concerns were raised about the use of the halal logo on the packaging of the sandwiches.
The Islamic development department (Jakim) confirmed that the sandwiches in question, along with the company manufacturing it, were not halal certified. The domestic trade and cost of living ministry had also raided the sandwich factory involved.
The ministry found that the halal logo on the packaging was from a certification issued to another company, which was no longer operating and had sold its business to the firm that was raided. - FMT
