Aide Pm Reminds All To Not Exploit Religious Issues For Incitement
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has reminded all parties to refrain from taking advantage of current issues involving religious mockery to further incite racial sentiments or sow seeds of hatred.
Anwar’s senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said the prime minister noted sinister attempts by certain parties with vested interests to create a perception of “double standard” on actions taken in such cases.
“This is a baseless and unfounded accusation.
“Anyone who insults any religion in Malaysia will be investigated and prosecuted accordingly,” said Nashrul during the Prime Minister’s Office daily briefing.
He then listed recent actions taken both by authorities and the courts in cases involving insults to religion.
Among others, cases cited include RM60,000 fine each for KK Mart and the company’s supplier of socks printed with the word “Allah”, and the RM10,000 fine each against comedian Harith Iskander and Cecelia Yap, accused of mocking the Prophet Muhammad.
“In the cases I listed earlier, it is clear that all were investigated, prosecuted, and ultimately punished.
“All these actions were based on existing legal provisions, and every reported case went through the country’s legal processes and rulings.
“This serves as a firm message to all Malaysians to put an end to the culture of insulting any religion, culture, or race in any space within Malaysia,” said Nashrul.
Previously, three Era FM hosts courted public backlash over their video mocking the Thaipusam kavadi ritual.
However, individuals who came out in the trio’s defence, including preacher Zamri Vinoth, had further sparked outcries and prompted numerous police reports related to insult on religion. - Mkini
