Agc To Oppose Aman Palestin Bid To Unfreeze 11 Accounts

The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) will be objecting to Aman Palestin’s judicial review leave application against MACC’s freezing of the NGO’s 11 bank accounts.
The aid group’s lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali said the AGC’s representative stated this during this morning’s Kuala Lumpur High Court case management of the civil action.
During a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex the lawyer said judge Amarjeet Singh had also set Feb 27 to hear Aman Palestin’s bid for leave to proceed with the judicial review.
Rafique said the civil court expedited the hearing date, following a certificate of urgency filed by Aman Palestin, as the matter involved RM10 million of frozen funds already ear-marked to assist Palestinians caught in a civil war with Israel forces in Gaza.
When contacted, the AGC’s senior federal counsel Nur Irmawatie Daud - who is acting for the MACC and government - confirmed that they would be objecting to the judicial review leave being given to Aman Palestin.
On Jan 31, Aman Palestin filed a legal challenge against MACC’s freezing order over the bank accounts belonging to the NGO and other entities.
In a press statement accompanying the court filing, Rafique contended that MACC did not respond to the NGO’s two letters - dated Nov 27, 2023 and Jan 9, 2024 - which appealed and requested consideration for the accounts to be unfrozen to enable financial aid to be sent directly to the victims of war violence in Palestine.
The freeze was over an MACC investigation into the alleged misuse of donation money. It was made under the MACC Act 2009, the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorist Financing, and Proceeds from Illegal Activities Act 2001, and the Penal Code.
Aman Palestin was established in 2004 to channel humanitarian efforts and collect funds for Palestinians affected by the Israeli occupation. - Mkini
