PAC chairman Wong Kah Woh says the integrity of the country’s public administration needs to be improved.PETALING JAYA: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will be calling on Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki to discuss the agency’s plans to fight corruption and improve the integrity of the country’s public administration.
PAC chairman Wong Kah Woh said MACC would also be presenting a report and would comment on the findings of Transparency International’s (TI) Global Corruption Barometer Asia 2020 report.
The report, released last week, had found that 71% of Malaysians thought government corruption was a big problem, with 39% feeling that corruption had increased in the last 12 months.
It also found that 36% of Malaysians found their MPs to be corrupt, a higher percentage than seven other countries in Asia, including Bangladesh (18%), Taiwan (17%) and China (11%).
TI surveyed 20,000 people across 17 Asian countries. Malaysia’s portion of the study was conducted between July 2019 and June this year.
“PAC is of the opinion that the figures show the distrust of Malaysians towards the integrity of the country’s public administration and its members.
“Factors contributing to this situation must be identified, and efforts towards combating corruption enhanced,” Wong said in a statement today.
He said the effectiveness of the National Anti-Corruption Plan (NACP) required a review, as the survey was conducted at the same time the NACP was implemented.
Wong said PAC would also be contacting TI for a briefing on the report. - FMT
