After 9 Years Selangor Still Mulling Jalan V David Proposal
The renaming of Petaling Jaya’s Jalan Barat after the late MP and unionist V David is still on the cards, although it has yet been implemented nine years after it the move was first announced
“We are looking into the matter but there is no immediate response at the moment,” Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari’s office told Malaysiakini when contacted
The proposal was revived by DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang, who raised the question of what happened to the party's suggestion of honouring the man who was instrumental in Malaysia adopting May Day as a workers’ holiday
As far back as May 2010, it was announced by then menteri besar Khalid Ibrahim that Jalan Barat would be renamed Jalan Dr V David once the state government unveiled redevelopment plan for the city
However, this redesignation has not materialised. On another matter, the menteri besar’s office confirmed that the name change of Jalan Semangat in Petaling Jaya to Jalan Professor Khoo Kay Kim will be applied with immediate effect
“It will be implemented immediately. The Petaling Jaya Municipal Council will be taking immediate action,” said the office of the move to honour the prominent historian
On Friday, Amirudin announced that Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor had consented to the renaming
Jalan Semangat is located in Section 14, near Universiti Malaya, where Khoo used to teach
On Saturday, Perak Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu also said that the state government will consider any proposal to name one of the roads in the state after Khoo
Asked to comment on the issue of the proposed renaming, Bukit Gasing assemblyperson Rajiv Rishyakaran who has both roads in his constituency told Malaysiakini that he had “no objections to either suggestion”
Rajiv also stressed that it was important that “we focus on pressing matters like fixing the economy”. - Mkini
