Abang Jo Gives The Nod To Rm2mil Rule For Business Migrants
Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg said business investors might be granted permanent resident status but not Sarawak citizenship.PETALING JAYA: Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg has welcomed a suggestion to require a RM2 million deposit from West Malaysian businessmen who wish to migrate to Sarawak.
Abang Johari said the state is open to giving permanent resident status to business folk as long as they are willing to deposit RM2 million or purchase property with a value of no less than RM1.5 million, as suggested yesterday by deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof.
“Sarawak is like a gem, and if you look at our performance, we have overtaken Johor. We are among the top three (in economic development), and soon maybe we can overtake Selangor (the most developed state).
“That’s why, many people expressed their interest in wanting to move here,” The Borneo Post quoted him as saying.
He said the state is open to granting permanent resident status to those who can bring new ideas, and the suggestion will be discussed soon by the state government.
He cited that a similar policy is being implemented in Singapore, believing it would enable the state to generate more income.
However, it would be restricted to only granting permanent resident status, not Sarawak citizenship, Abang Johari added.
“Indeed, I welcome those who can generate employment for us. But this offer is only for those who are willing to invest money here. If they don’t, I’m sorry, they cannot be given permanent resident status,” he said.
Yesterday, Fadillah proposed making it mandatory for West Malaysian businessmen to deposit RM2 million into a state-owned bank in order to migrate to Sarawak.
Fadillah said Sarawak’s harmonious environment and political stability were major factors attracting “business friends in the peninsula wanting to migrate here”, adding that some in West Malaysia were envious of these facets of Sarawak. - FMT
