Zeti On Mc Unable To Take Stand In 1mdb Trial
Former BNM governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz will give details of her family’s links to fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, says ad hoc prosecutor Gopal Sri Ram. (Bernama pic)KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here was told today that former BNM governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz is unwell and unable to testify in Najib Razak’s 1MDB trial this week.
Zeti’s lawyers informed the prosecution that she had a fever and was vomiting.
“She is on two days’ MC (medical leave). We will provide her MC later,” deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib told the court.
Akram also said the prosecution had arranged for former AmBank relationship manager Joanna Yu and former Treasury secretary-general Irwan Serigar Abdullah to appear in court tomorrow.
He said another witness, former BSI banker and Singapore national Kevin Swampillai, is scheduled to testify next month.
Trial judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah asked the prosecution to ensure that Irwan is present tomorrow, as lawyer Shafee Abdullah said the defence can only cross-examine Yu next month.
Previously, the prosecution had indicated that they will call Zeti to testify. Ad hoc prosecutor Gopal Sri Ram had said she will give details of her family’s links to fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low.
Last year, blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin alleged that Zeti’s family members, particularly her husband and sons, received RM100 million from Jho Low.
It was also alleged that her family members had signed a statutory declaration in which they admitted receiving millions of ringgit in Singapore bank accounts, with the money coming from a company linked to Jho Low.
Najib is standing trial on 25 counts of money laundering and abuse of power over the alleged misuse of 1MDB funds amounting to RM2.28 billion deposited into his AmBank accounts between February 2011 and December 2014.
The hearing continues tomorrow. - FMT
