Zahid To Send Legal Letter Over Mahathir S Lobbying Claim
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has directed his lawyers to issue a letter of demand to Pejuang chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad for an apology.
This came after a report this afternoon quoted the former prime minister as saying that Zahid (above, right) had come to him to ask for the corruption investigations against him to be stopped.
In a statement today, Zahid said he never made such a request to Mahathir and accused him of lying.
“I was invited along with presidents of various parties by Mahathir to support him in forming a unity government. How could I possibly ask for the charges against me to be dropped in front of everyone?
“I have never asked Mahathir to do so.
“How could I lobby for the charges against me to be dropped before Mahathir became the seventh prime minister because I was the deputy prime minister at the time and there were no corruption investigations (against me), let alone court charges,” he said on Facebook.
Zahid was responding to a Berita Harian report that quoted Mahathir making the allegation.
Mahathir reportedly claimed that when there were signs that he would become the prime minister, Zahid came with two or three other people to his house to “be nice” to him and asked for the investigations against him to be dropped.
“At the time there was the possibility that I would become the prime minister, so for that reason, he wanted to be on good terms with me,” he was quoted as saying. - Mkini
