Zahid S Statement Alone Means Nothing Says Zaid
Zaid Ibrahim said whatever transpires in the Dewan Rakyat when Parliament reconvenes would depend on the action that Umno takes before that.PETALING JAYA: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s announcement that the party was withdrawing support for Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister means nothing by itself, according to Zaid Ibrahim.
Speaking to FMT, the former Umno man said there seemed to be no clarity as to what the party leadership wanted to do or hoped to achieve following its decision, or what comes next.
“The statement doesn’t impact the actual majority support for the prime minister. They must clarify their next step and say, as a party, that all have to act according to the wishes of the party.
“The party then has to make sure its decision will be observed in Parliament and elsewhere. Unless you state this clearly, nothing is going to happen and the issue of the prime minister and his majority support will be as it is,” he said.
He added that Attorney-General Idrus Harun’s statement that Muhyiddin remained the prime minister until his parliamentary majority was tested in the Dewan Rakyat was accurate.
Idrus had said whether or not an individual held the majority support of MPs must be determined by the elected representatives themselves, not through statements from political parties or leaders.
Zaid contended, however, that whatever transpires in the Dewan Rakyat when Parliament reconvenes would depend on the action that Umno takes before that.
“For example, if the Umno whip issues a statement that whoever goes against the decision of the party will be dismissed from the party, then we can expect there will be some ‘action’ when Parliament convenes.
“The important thing is for the party to know what they want to do. When they know what they want, only then will they be able to take the necessary action.”
Former prime minister Najib Razak had warned that Umno and Barisan Nasional MPs who continue to support Muhyiddin as prime minister despite the Supreme Council’s decision would “face the consequences” for not toeing the line.
Najib did not explicitly say they would be sacked, instead saying MPs who defied the party’s position would have to answer to the people come election time.
Parliament is set to reconvene for a special five-day sitting from July 26 onwards. - FMT
