Yes President Wee But Voters Will Decide Mca S Fate Says Ti
Former MCA vice-president Ti Lian Ker fired at party president Wee Ka Siong today, warning that while MCA may decide its future internally, it is Malaysian voters who will determine its survival.
He rebutted Wee’s remarks yesterday that outsiders should “mind their own business” when it comes to MCA’s future direction.
“Yes, president Wee! MCA will decide its future, but outsiders will be the judge!” Ti (above, left) said.
The former senator cautioned that dismissing public voices, including potential supporters and fence-sitters, could alienate the very people MCA needs to win over to regain political relevance.
“These outsiders could be our supporters, potential voters who are concerned with the party’s direction. We do not tell them to ‘stay out’ or ‘mind their own business’ in a condescending manner,” Ti posted on Facebook.
He stressed that public perception, and not internal loyalty, will determine MCA’s viability in the current political landscape, especially among younger and more critical voters.

MCA president Wee Ka Siong (left) and Umno president Ahmad Zahid HamidiHe warned that if MCA is seen as “subservient and dependent” on Umno, and continues to respond passively to political setbacks, it will be “eliminated and cast out for good into further irrelevance”.
Ti also lamented the party’s diminished stature, pointing out that even regional parties in Sabah and Sarawak have grown more influential than MCA, which was once the second-largest party in the ruling coalition.
“We cannot be an ostrich hiding our heads in the sand, avoiding the uncomfortable truth that Umno has shifted its political allegiance to DAP.
“…The Malaysian public and many MCA members are waiting for leaders to act, react, or at least posture in the face of political insults and slaps.”
Ti’s comments came a day after Wee reportedly pushed back against growing calls, including from within the party, for MCA to review its position in BN.
Wee, when asked whether MCA would consider leaving the BN coalition, said that decisions on the party’s future would be made internally.
“As president of MCA, when the time comes for me to make a decision, I will make a decision. I will consult my people.
“It’s not for other people to tell us to join or to leave. This is not their party. Mind your own business. This is my party. We know better,” Wee was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today.
MCA’s silence vs MIC’s shift
In his statement, Ti also contrasted MCA’s response with that of its fellow BN component, MIC.
He noted that MIC president SA Vigneswaran recently hinted at a potential pivot away from Umno to preserve the party’s relevance and better serve the Indian community.
“MIC has spoken, postured, and there are whispers they will take a giant step away from Umno. On the other hand, the MCA president’s silence is deafening,” Ti said.
He accused Wee of camouflaging political inaction as strategy, and warned that such passivity risks reinforcing the image of MCA as a “stooge”, subservient to its dominant coalition partner.
“You can tell the outsiders to stay out in an arrogant or haughty manner, but you cannot deny the fact that these so-called outsiders are, in fact, seeing cowardice in MCA’s leadership,” he said.
Saying bye-bye
On Aug 2, Malaysiakini reported that former MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek said the party should make a break if BN continues to follow the rule that only allows incumbent parties to contest the seats they hold in the next general election.

Former MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek“If you ask me, I’ll tell you plainly - if BN continues with its rule that any component party losing twice in the same constituency can no longer be allowed to contest there under the BN banner, then it’s time for MCA to say ‘bye-bye’,” the 78-year-old said in a Chinese-language podcast.
Lately, MCA divisions nationwide have been holding annual delegates’ meetings, with many passing resolutions rejecting any form of cooperation with DAP.
Some divisions even supported calls for MCA to exit the Madani government, go solo in the next general election, and leave BN altogether.
On June 30, MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon said the party leadership would review all division-level resolutions before deciding on the party’s future direction, possibly by tabling related motions at its national AGM on Nov 2. - Mkini
