Woman Arrested For Allegedly Insulting Islam At Comedy Club
The police have arrested a woman who allegedly insulted Islam during her recent performance at a comedy club in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI).
She has since been remanded for three days starting July 10 to 12.
According to the police, the woman is being detained at Brickfields district police headquarters while investigations are still ongoing.
Cops said yesterday they were investigating the case under Section 298A of the Penal Code for causing disharmony on grounds of religion, as well under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for improper network use.
Previously, a video of a woman who took off her headscarf and baju kurung on stage at the Crackhouse Comedy Club in TTDI had gone viral on social media.
Crackhouse Comedy Club said it banned the woman and her partner from the venue immediately after her stand-up performance and proceeded to lodge a police report.
Deputy Federal Territories Minister Jalaluddin Alias also today announced that the comedy club’s licence has been suspended due to the controversial viral video.
‘Shocked and gobsmacked’
Crackhouse Comedy Club co-founder Rizal Van Geyzel recounted that his team was initially happy to see a Malay woman in a headscarf who wanted to participate in the comedy event, as reported by The Vibes.
However, he said all the staff and the other comics present were “totally shocked and gobsmacked” when the woman started disrobing her tudung and clothes.
“We were getting our bearings together. Before any action could be taken (usually by a ring of a bell or turning the mic off), she left the stage. We were all just stunned,” Van Geyzel added.
He said the woman was not a regular at the club, nor did the team know her, but they usually allow unknown people to perform in order to discover new talent.
However, he said from now on, they will be more careful about unknown people performing on their stage.
“Open mic nights have to remain ‘organic’. If not, there is nothing ‘open’ about these nights,” he said. - Mkini
