Universiti Sains Malaysia's Dr Sivamurugan Pandian said all politicians should honour the appeal to set aside their differences and make the people's welfare their top priority.
He said the call for a political ceasefire shows how serious the King is about keeping the people safe during the pandemic.
"Maybe the King is hoping for a reconciliation in the government and for it to focus on what's important for the people," he said.
Earlier today, the Agong said he saw no reason to impose a state of emergency as the government has been handling the pandemic well.
The King also emphasised the importance of passing the 2021 Budget in the Dewan Rakyat, aside from exhorting all politicians to behave themselves amidst the outbreak.
Since the Agong decided that there is no need to declare a state of emergency in the whole or parts of the country, Universiti Malaya's Awang Azman Awang Pawi said Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has two options to consider – either resign or test his majority in the Dewan Rakyat, which is scheduled to sit on Nov 2.
With Parliament's session less than two weeks away, Awang Azman said Muhyiddin should just face his political enemies in the Lower House and try to secure the majority needed.
"This is the most democratic and dignified way (of ending the political uncertainty)," he said, adding that the prime minister might want to have a discussion with Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on either forming a unity government or getting opposition MPs to support the 2021 Budget.] - NST
