Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin previously raised concerns over the safety of the booster dose after his father was hospitalised due to an adverse reaction.PETALING JAYA: Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin said the health ministry should not make it compulsory for people taking the Covid-19 booster dose to sign an indemnity agreement if it is confident that the vaccine is safe.
This comes after reports of people suffering adverse effects after taking their booster shot.
“If the health ministry is confident that there is no risk of adverse effects after getting the booster dose, then there is no need for recipients to sign the indemnity agreement.
“The health ministry must provide compensation if recipients experience adverse effects,” he said in a statement.
Asri wanted the health ministry to prove that the booster dose was safe by guaranteeing that compensation would be given to those facing adverse effects.
FMT has contacted health minister Khairy Jamaluddin and director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah to comment on Asri’s statement.
However, an aide said the minister would not give any comment on Asri’s proposal.
Yesterday, Khairy said only a few booster dose recipients were reported to have experienced adverse events following immunisation (AEFI).
He noted that the AEFI rate for booster doses was 84 per 1,000,000 doses, compared with the overall AEFI rate of 390 per 1,000,000 doses.
Asri had previously voiced concern over the safety of the booster dose when his father was hospitalised for more than a week after receiving the third injection.
On Jan 17, the health ministry said it was conducting an investigation into the AEFI incident involving Asri’s father. - FMT
