(Facebook pic)PETALING JAYA: Progressive Democratic Party president Tiong King Sing has once again slammed Khairy Jamaluddin over the rapid rise in Covid-19 cases, saying the health minister has an “inseparable relationship” with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine manufacturer.
Given that the number of the new Covid-19 positive cases has again crossed the 10,000 mark after many months, Tiong asked why Khairy is still refusing to allow the public to choose the type of vaccine they prefer.
He said only the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was offered.
The prime minister’s special envoy to China quipped that Khairy seemed to have an “inseparable relationship” with the vaccine manufacturer. “If not, why refuse to offer Sinovac and Sinopharm vaccines to the people? Is this an effective way to encourage people to be vaccinated?”
Further, the Bintulu MP said, despite the rise in cases, it seemed that Khairy did not put in “much prevention and control efforts”.
“The epidemic is getting more serious across the country. What is Khairy’s action? Why are there still no plans to implement additional prevention SOPs for this increasingly alarming epidemic?”
Tiong accused Khairy and health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah of failing to take effective measures to curb the spread of the virus.
He said Khairy was behaving like the “captain of a sinking ship”, merely asking the people to remain calm when the situation was getting out of control.
He said the health ministry must inform the public on the plan and directions to combat this epidemic, and not just announce the numbers.
Recently, Khairy predicted that there would be a surge in Covid-19 cases due to the Omicron variant but said the public should not panic.
He said the public should also look at other important indicators such as hospital and intensive care unit (ICU) admissions.
Last month, Tiong criticised the health minister and raised questions over the purchase of Covid-19 vaccines. He asked Khairy for the number of vaccine doses that his ministry had purchased since he took over the post from his predecessor, Dr Adham Baba, in August.
Tiong also questioned if Noor Hisham was the “best person” to lead the charge against the Omicron variant, citing his alleged refusal to seek advice from China where the pandemic first began.
Khairy defended the health director-general, saying China’s Covid-19 strategy was “containment” or “zero Covid-19”, whereas Malaysia’s was mitigation as it could not afford a lockdown. - FMT
