Wee Slammed For Playing Race Card After Exposing Perfect Matric Scorer Failing To Secure Law Course In Fav Public Uni

STPM top achiever Edward Wong Yi Xian who was trolled ‘left, right and centre’ for whining after failing to land an accounting course in Universiti Malaya (UM) should feel vindicated for it has been revealed there is a Matriculation top scorer with 4.0 CGPA and 100% merit being deprived of her favourite law course.
Interestingly, MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong who exposed the plight of 19-year-old lawyer-aspirant by the name of Lee from Melaka found himself accused of making it a trend to cry victim, playing the race card and riding on the issue to gain political mileage to begin with.

For context, the Ayer Hitam MP met Lee on Saturday night (Sept 13) to hear her plight of failing to secure her spot in one of the three public universities “where a local Chinese student can study Law” – UM, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM).
“She was shortlisted and attended the interviews. She walked in with confidence, knowing she had given her all,” Wee penned in a Facebook post which has since garnered 3.8K likes, 4.2K comments and 720 shares at the time of writing.
“But when the results were released, her world came crashing down. All three universities rejected her. Instead, she was offered a place in accounting at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) – her fourth choice – far from the dream she had worked so hard for.”
Added the former Transport Minister: “I can only guess that the Higher Education Ministry and the three universities would give this as the only ‘reasonable’ reply: Lee’s interview performance was poor, and that’s why she wasn’t admitted. “
Precisely, this was the point of contention as Wee was schooled on the possibility that the candidate did not perform during her interview session for “even if she is equipped with 100As”, the ultimate weightage lies in the interview – just like when one applies for a job.

Other commenters harped on the fact that Lee has ‘miscued’ in her course selection given her Matriculation subjects are not suited for a law degree which among others “emphasises on history and English Literature”.
Moreover, her subject foundation (which was made up of mathematics and accounting) is skewed towards accounting and business administration courses, hence it makes valid sense that “she was offered a degree in accounting”.

Or that she fared poorly in her English examination given “for law, you usually have to get an ‘A’ in English to even get an interview at the major UK unis”.

A few commenters further highlighted that law courses are not only offered at UM, UKM and UUM but also at other public universities such as Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) and the International Islamic University Malaysia (UIAM).

At the end of the day, some commenters teased the MCA chieftain that he should instead counselled Lee to apply to the National University of Singapore (NUS) as a scholarship “could be readily available” or to even sponsor her himself to do a law course at private universities.

Editor’s Note: It is worthwhile noting that renowned political analyst Prof James Chin has emerged the second educationist to question the existence of meritocracy in the nation’s education system after political scientist-turned-politician Prof Ramasamy Palanisamy having blasted the Higher Education Ministry for continuously repeating untruth that admissions to public universities are based on merit.
