Waytha Writes To Hamzah Seeks Endorsement For Race Religion Rci
Malaysian Advancement Party (MAP) chairperson P Waytha Moorthy has written to opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin, urging Perikatan Nasional to support the establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on racial and religious harmony.
“Malaysia stands at a crossroads. Unity cannot be built on words alone - it demands the courage to act, even when inconvenient.
“As the opposition leader, you have a unique opportunity to show that your vision is not merely for political convenience but a sincere step toward building a Malaysia where every citizen - regardless of race, religion, or background - feels seen, heard, and respected,” he said in the letter.
Waytha (above) described PN’s vision for a “new national consensus” - centred on shared goals, shared prosperity, and compassionate governance - as a timely and commendable step amid Malaysia’s deepening political and racial divides.
However, he said the concept of unity has too often been maintained through silence rather than reconciliation, with political convenience taking precedence over honest dialogue, sacrificing long-term cohesion for short-term gain.
“True unity cannot be forged on superficial appeals. It requires morally clear leadership - leaders willing to put the nation's long-term harmony above partisan interests. It requires action, not just aspiration,” he added.
While acknowledging the aspirational nature of the “new national consensus”, Waytha pointed out that it lacks clear mechanisms to achieve its goals.

Opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin“It also raises questions, especially when juxtaposed with the historical positions of your coalition partners. For instance, PAS' longstanding exclusionary rhetoric starkly contrasts with the inclusive spirit of this new proposal.
“This understandably leads many, especially among the non-Malay community, to question whether the ‘new consensus’ is simply a political overture timed to regain lost ground. It's important to address these concerns and ensure that all coalition partners are aligned with the vision of national unity and inclusion,” he added.
‘New national consensus’
Waytha said that if PN is sincere in wanting unity, it should support MAP and Hindraf’s call for the RCI, which he described as a crucial step toward truth, reconciliation, and national renewal.
“Supporting this RCI would send the clearest signal yet that PN is committed to political rebranding and genuine nation-building,” he added.
ADSPreviously, Hamzah stated that PN’s vision of a “new national consensus” is aimed at overcoming existing political and societal divisions and charting Malaysia’s future prosperity.
Speaking at the Iseas–Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore last month, the coalition’s deputy chairperson emphasised that it must not be limited to “one race, one religion or one region”.
“Malaysia must move past the age of political survivalism. We must reject the politics of revenge and rekindle the spirit of shared nationhood.
“We cannot afford a Malaysia where the colour of your skin, or your postal code, determines the quality of your life,” Hamzah said. - Mkini
