Wan Fayhsal Slams Ministry For Banning Opposition On Teachers Day
Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said opposition MPs can play a part in helping schools in their constituencies if given the chance.PETALING JAYA: Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal has criticised the education ministry for allegedly not allowing opposition politicians to celebrate Teachers’ Day in schools.
In a post on X, the Machang MP shared a WhatsApp message purportedly from a top education ministry official instructing all state and district education directors to ensure that principals and headmasters do not allow politicians who are not from the unity government to deliver cakes to schools.
Stressing that opposition MPs can play a part in helping schools in their constituencies if given the opportunity, he said he understood that government officials were “just following orders”.
“I apologise to all the teachers in Machang for not being able to celebrate Teachers’ Day in schools today,” he said.
“The directive clearly treats us as criminals or ‘persona non grata.’ Understandably, only criminals are not allowed to enter schools.
“We don’t want to politicise education. We want to develop the nation’s children.”
FMT has reached out to the education ministry for comment.
In April 2023, education minister Fadhlina Sidek said both government and opposition politicians can organise programmes or attend events in schools, provided that they apply for permission.
She said this was in line with a circular issued in February 2023.
“The ministry has issued guidelines not only for prominent politicians but for all parties, including non-governmental organisations and individuals, who must obtain permission from the ministry,” she said in a Bernama report.
Fadhlina was asked to comment on claims that opposition leaders were not allowed to enter schools in a state to attend a programme at the school. - FMT
