(Facebook pic)JOHOR BAHRU: The school van driver detained after a fatal accident involving a preschooler in Bandar Seri Alam here has been released on police bail.
A five-year-old girl was killed when she was hit by a school van after the driver had dropped her and her six-year-old brother off in front of their house yesterday morning.
Seri Alam police chief Sohaimi Ishak said the 50-year-old van driver was released after her statement was recorded, with the police also recording a statement from the girl’s 39-year-old mother.
“The driver (claimed) that she did not see the victim (in front of the van) when the incident occurred,” Sohaimi told reporters here.
“She saw the victim’s brother walking behind the van to the gate of the house and assumed the victim was with him.”
He said the driver had a licence to operate the van and did not have any outstanding traffic summonses.
In a separate case, Sohaimi said a 51-year-old man was arrested for trying to bribe a team of policemen with RM18,000 during a raid on several premises where untaxed alcoholic beverages were found in Pasir Gudang yesterday.
Sohaimi said the bribe was an inducement not to take action against a 48-year-old foreign worker, who was also detained.
He said police found 1,080 cans and 384 bottles of contraband alcoholic beverages in the house during the 2pm raid.
The 51-year-old man, who is the foreigner’s employer, was handed to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission for further action. - FMT
