Us Praises Anwar For Mediating Thai Cambodia Ceasefire

The United States praised Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his efforts in brokering a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia recently.
“We are grateful to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his leadership and for hosting the ceasefire talks.
“We urge all parties to follow through on their commitments,” said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a statement yesterday.
Yesterday, Anwar announced that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an unconditional ceasefire effective midnight, following peace talks mediated by the Tambun MP in Putrajaya.
ADSAnwar said the ceasefire was among the common understandings reached at the meeting attended by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.
“PM Hun Manet and Acting PM Phumtham Wechayachai have expressed their positions and willingness for an immediate ceasefire and return to normalcy.
“US President Donald Trump has been in contact with the leaders of both countries, urging the leaders to find a peaceful solution to the situation,” Anwar said during a joint press conference with the two leaders.
Malaysia is this year’s Asean chair, a position which rotates annually among Asean members, including Thailand and Cambodia.
‘Honour your commitments’
Rubio said he and Trump are committed to an immediate cessation of violence and expect the governments of Cambodia and Thailand to honour their commitments to settle the dispute.
“And the US will remain committed to and engaged in this US-Malaysia-organised process to end this conflict,” he added.

Manet also claimed that tensions between the Asean neighbours had displaced some 300,000 people - 140,000 from Cambodia and 160,000 from Thailand.
Hostilities between the two Southeast Asian nations have flared since May 28, following a deadly incident at the Preah Vihear area that claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier.  - Mkini
