Thailand Cambodia Have Agreed To Ceasefire Anwar Says
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today said that Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to a ceasefire and to withdraw their troops from the border.
Anwar said both countries had agreed but requested some time, as their troops were already stationed at the border and needed time to pull back.
“Yesterday, I had a phone conversation with the acting Thai premier and the Cambodian prime minister, because of Malaysia’s position and their respect for us.
“I’m grateful because when I spoke with them, both responded respectfully. Why? Because Malaysia is a peaceful and stable country,” he said when addressing the 2025 Anti-Drug Day Celebration in Jitra today.
ADSYesterday, Bernama reported that the prime minister welcomed the positive signals and willingness shown by Bangkok and Phnom Penh in considering the implementation of a ceasefire to prevent further conflict.
Anwar was reported to have contacted Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai on Thursday evening to convey Malaysia’s concern over the escalating tensions.

Earlier, media reports stated that Thai and Cambodian troops clashed on Thursday in the disputed border area, with both sides blaming each other for initiating the latest confrontation.
Tensions between the two Southeast Asian nations have been escalating since May 28, following a deadly incident in the Preah Vihear area that claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier.
The two countries have been at odds for decades over their still-undemarcated 817km border, and the dispute continues to strain diplomatic relations.
Greater clarity
In a related development, Phumtham said Thailand has no objection to a ceasefire in its ongoing border clashes with Cambodia, but is seeking greater clarity on the terms.
Phumtham, who is also the interior minister, said he spoke with Anwar, who called on Thursday evening and has offered to act as a mediator for a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia.
Thailand, he said, agrees in principle with the offer but stressed that Cambodia must first demonstrate a clear and sincere commitment.
“We have no objection, but for a ceasefire to happen, there must be clarity. We’ve been trying to achieve this all along, but to no avail,” Phumtham said at a press conference on the Thailand-Cambodia border situation on Friday.
He revealed that he had asked Anwar to ensure there is a concrete commitment and guarantees that similar incidents would not recur.

“Only then can we consider the next steps. For now, our military remains on high alert,” he said.
ADSOn Thursday, Anwar, in his capacity as the current Asean chair, called Phumtham and Hun, appealing to them for an immediate ceasefire and return to peaceful dialogue to resolve the ongoing border dispute.
Anwar said Malaysia stands ready to assist and facilitate this process in the spirit of Asean unity and shared responsibility.
Thai and Cambodian forces clashed early Thursday in a disputed border area, with both sides accusing each other of initiating the latest round of violence.
