Us Embassy Delegation Engages University Of Cyberjaya Students On Climate Crisis And Energy Transition

The US Embassy Delegation, led by His Excellency Ambassador Brian McFeeters, visited University of Cyberjaya (UoC) on 19 May 2023 to participate in a speaking engagement and sharing session with students. The purpose of the visit was to raise awareness about the climate crisis emphasising the importance of global collaboration in addressing climate change and transitioning to clean energy.

Tan Sri Dato' Dr. R. Palan, Pro-Chancellor, University of Cyberjaya giving a token of appreciation to His Excellency Ambassador Brian McFeeters from the US Embassy, accompanied by Katherine Jernigan, Economic Officer and Professor Dr. Zabidi Hussin, Vice Chancellor, University of Cyberjaya
The event highlighted several key points, including the current negative effects of climate change, such as flooding, heat waves, hurricanes, and wildfires. Governments worldwide, including in the United States, have taken significant steps to combat climate change, such as investing in renewable energy, the retirement of coal plants, and carbon capture projects.

Ambassador Brian McFeeters stressed the need for everyone to play their part together in combating the climate crisis, especially young people. "The climate crisis is alarming, but we can solve it together. With better technology and investments in renewable energy, we're making progress. Young people's participation is critical. Transitioning to cleaner energy makes economic sense and creates jobs. The U.S. is committed to assisting Malaysia. Together, we can solve this crisis,” he said.

The delegation also emphasised the critical role that young people play in finding solutions to the climate crisis and urged them to be aware of the urgency and seriousness of the issue. Scientists have given a timeline of about 8 years to make critical decisions and implement changes to avoid the worst consequences of climate change. The main challenge lies in accelerating the actions of governments and the private sector. However, positive developments in renewable energy, technology innovation, and economic investments are making the transition to clean energy feasible and affordable globally.

Welcomed by University of Cyberjaya Pro-Chancellor, Tan Sri Dato' Dr. R. Palan, the event was also graced by Katherine Jernigan, Economic Officer, Akash R. Suri, Public Diplomacy Officer, Ameera Kamalrudin, Higher Education Coordinator in Cultural Affairs, and Professor Dr. Zabidi Husin, Vice Chancellor of University of Cyberjaya, the university’s senate members, and more.

In response to the critical imperative of addressing the climate crisis, the University of Cyberjaya is deeply committed through its alignment with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) initiatives. By actively engaging in SGD 1: No Poverty, the university empowers vulnerable communities to build resilience to climate change impacts. In SGD 2: Zero Hunger, their initiatives combat food insecurity and promote sustainable agricultural practices, reducing the environmental footprints. Under SGD 3: Good Health and Well-being, the university's public health awareness programmes contribute to creating climate-resilient communities. Moreover, by championing SGD 5: Gender Equality, the university promotes inclusivity and women's participation in climate action, fostering more effective responses to the climate crisis. With its serious commitment to these Sustainable Development Goals, University of Cyberjaya is at the forefront of efforts to address the climate crisis and foster a sustainable future.

Suri, Public Diplomacy Officer, Ameera Kamalrudin, Higher Education Coordinator in Cultural Affairs, Professor Dr. Zabidi Husin, Vice Chancellor of University of Cyberjaya, the university’s senate members, and students who attended the speaking engagement and sharing session at University of Cyberjaya’s library
University of Cyberjaya is also proud to announce its active involvement in a solar project as part of its ongoing commitment to supporting climate change initiatives. By harnessing the power of solar energy, a clean and renewable resource, the university is taking significant strides to reduce its carbon footprint and promote sustainable practices. The solar project will be strategically located atop the campus building, maximizing its potential to generate clean and environmentally friendly electricity.

In addition, University of Cyberjaya will also soon embark on a collaboration with the US Embassy to be part of its ACCESS Programme. This initiative, in partnership with the Malaysian Ministry of Education, aims to empower students in Malaysia to become confident leaders and critical thinkers in addressing climate change.

The visit served as a powerful platform for students to deepen their understanding on the climate crisis and energy transition. University of Cyberjaya's partnership with the US Embassy reaffirms its dedication to equipping students with the knowledge and skills to tackle the complex challenges of our time.
