Umno Youth Wants Rci Into Thomas Claims
Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki claims Tommy Thomas had practised selective prosecution by dropping cases against Lim Guan Eng and 12 people charged with supporting LTTEPETALING JAYA: Umno Youth has called for a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to investigate former attorney-general Tommy Thomas’ claims in his recently released memoir.
The wing listed several issues that should be investigated, including the admission by Thomas of having a hand in the appointment of the chief justice of Malaysia, the Court of Appeal president and the chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak after a series of discussions with then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said this contravened the law as Thomas was not part of the Judicial Appointments Commission.
He said the RCI should probe the alleged interference by Mahathir in the judiciary, as claimed by Thomas.
Asyraf also accused Thomas of selective prosecution after he dropped corruption charges against Lim Guan Eng although the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission said it had a case against the former finance minister.
He said Thomas had also halted proceedings against 12 people, including two DAP leaders, charged with supporting the now-defunct Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
Asyraf said Thomas had violated the Official Secrets Act and the Oath of Secrecy by revealing in his book, “My Story: Justice in the Wilderness”, discussions he had with the prime minister and the King.
He also claimed that Thomas had committed a breach of ethics by allegedly lobbying for the attorney-general’s post before the 13th general election.
He said the RCI should also investigate the alleged judicial misconduct as claimed in an affidavit by Court of Appeal judge Hamid Sultan Abu Backer in 2019.
Finally, Asyraf said, Thomas had insulted the country’s legal administration by claiming officers were either too bureaucratic, not committed enough or incompetent.
Since the release of Thomas’ memoir, several parties have lodged police reports against him, including his predecessor, Mohamed Apandi Ali, and retired director-general of the Judicial and Legal Training Institute Mohamad Hanafiah Zakaria. - FMT
