“We have received it,” Anwar, the finance minister, said at the ministry’s monthly assembly here.
“I will check with the party’s secretary-general on the status,” he added, referring to Fuziah Salleh.
Last week, Umno said it would send a protest note to the leaders of parties in the unity government who were planning to welcome its members into their fold.
Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the protest note was a “stern warning” to the other components in the unity government.
The note followed Tengku Zafrul’s confirmation that his application to join PKR had been accepted two weeks earlier.
Bernama reported that Tengku Zafrul, the investment, trade and industry minister, was now a member of PKR’s Ampang division.
The former Umno Supreme Council member resigned from the party on May 30.
The same day, Asyraf warned PKR against accepting Tengku Zafrul, saying it would be “very inappropriate” for any party in the unity government to do so.
Calls also arose for Barisan Nasional to review its partnership with Pakatan Harapan in the next general election if PKR accepted Tengku Zafrul as a member.
On June 2, however, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party was not losing sleep over Tengku Zafrul’s decision to quit and his intention to join PKR. - FMT
