Will Ampang Remain A Safe Pkr Seat After Turncoat Natured Tengku Zafrul S Parachuting
THAT Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz has recently joined the Ampang PKR division has been seen as a strategic move to eventually succeed Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail who is aligned to the party’s former deputy president and Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli.
This follows a confirmation by PKR secretary-general Datuk Fuziah Salleh that the party’s Central Leadership Council has approved the application of the former UMNO supreme council member in a meeting on July 26.
For the record, Tengku Zafrul whose second and final senatorship term is expiring on Dec 2 ‘desperately’ needs to win a parliamentary level election lest he will have to step down from his current Cabinet portfolio.
“Why Ampang? Why not Tanjung Karang, Sabak Bernam or Putrajaya? There’re also Lembah Pantai and Bandar Tun Razak. Why? Muahahahaha….” reacted environmentalist MokcikMagic (@KlutzyKucing) to Tengku Zafrul’s joining the Ampang PKR division.
In a nutshell, Ampang (formerly Ampang Jaya) which state constituencies comprised Bukit Antarabangsa and Lembah Jaya has been deemed a Pakatan Harapan (PH) stronghold with incumbent MP Rodziah having retained the seat after its three-term MP Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin ‘jumped ship’ to Bersatu following the Sheraton Move incident.
What is obvious from a strategic stand-point is that Ampang is deemed a “safe seat” for PKR while Tengku Zafrul is seen as a potential MP candidate to replace Rodziah come the 16th General Election (GE16).
Moreover, some PKR insiders also perceived the move as a “cleansing exercise” of former economy minister Rafizi’s Team Hiruk with a pro-Team Damai candidate aligned to reigning deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar.

Many political observers also hit out at Tengku Zafrul’s turncoat tendencies with one regarding him as both a “survivor” for having outlived PM8 Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and PM9 Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, hence qualifying him as “a PM in the making that can’t even win a seat, always need backdoor help”.
Another berated Tengku Zafrul for having no principle with his obvious portrayal of opportunist behaviour while one foresees “the eventual destruction of PKR from the inside”.

Sone seemingly Rafizi backers reckoned that Ampang “would cease to be a PKR stronghold” with Tengku Zafrul having parachuted there with one commenter suggested “passing him the PAS application form given the moment PKR loses, he may need a new party”.

Truth seeker FreeMalaysian (@FreeMsian) reminded Ampang voters that they have one task in hand come GE16 which is “to vote anyone other than Tengku Zafrul” as he alluded to “numerous scandals when he was the key in the previous (backdoor) government”.
“Instead of being investigated, Anwar (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) rewarded him with a cabinet post,” lamented FreeMalaysian.
In light of Tengku Zafrul’s ‘historical’ loss under the UMNO-Barisan Nasional (BN) ticket for the Kuala Selangor parliamentary seat in GE15 (to current Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad), some cheeky commenters wondered why not he is parachuted to PMX’s deemed fortress of Permatang Pauh. – Aug 12, 2025
