Umno S Jamal Yunos Fails To Strike Out Former Minister Yeo Bee Yin S Suit

Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Md Yunos has failed to strike out a defamation suit against him filed by former energy, science, technology, environment and climate change minister Yeo Bee Yin
The Kuala Lumpur High Court this afternoon dismissed Jamal’s striking out application following submissions by lawyers for both sides this afternoon
Speaking to the media after proceedings, Jamal’s counsel Mohammad Nasser Yusof confirmed that judge Rozana Ali Yusof dismissed the striking out application
“The court dismissed the application on grounds that it had no merit
“The court set costs at RM2,000 (to be paid by Jamal to Yeo),” said Nasser. Yeo’s counsel Sankara Nair also confirmed that the court had dismissed the striking out bid adding that Oct 9 was fixed for further case management
The legal action was set to come up for full hearing before Rozana for five days from Nov 9
Neither Yeo, who is the Bakri MP, nor Jamal was present for the court proceedings today
On July 8, it was reported that Jamal filed to strike out the DAP lawmaker’s suit, which was in relation to an allegation of abuse of funds from Yayasan Warisan Anak Selangor (Yawas)
It was reported that Jamal filed the application on grounds that Yeo’s suit was allegedly premature due to the still-ongoing investigation by the MACC into the issue
Yeo filed the legal action on June 14, 2017, seeking RM5 million in compensation from Jamal over a statement of his linked to the Yawas issue
In her statement of claim, she claimed that the defendant had issued a defamatory statement on March 21, 2017, which was published by several newspapers, online news portals, and on Jamal’s Facebook page
Yeo sought compensatory, aggravated and exemplary damages as well as an injunction to prevent Jamal from repeating the allegations. - Mkini
