Umno S Defeated Sg Udang Candidate Vows To Purge Internal Saboteurs
Umno's Sungai Udang candidate Mohamad Ali Mohamad who suffered a surprise defeat to Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the Malacca polls has vowed to purge internal saboteurs from the party.
Ali, who is also the Malacca Umno deputy chief, said while BN had succeeded in securing the Malacca state government, he had received unpleasant reports about the actions of certain Umno members.
He said among the complaints were that they did not aid BN, assisted the enemy or sabotaged the party due to unhappiness with the central leadership's decision.
"Before this, some Umno members decided to stay quiet when the party faced hardship. They did not help in the struggle and even left the party.
"Now that Umno is back in power they start showing their face. Someone even tried to sideline our allies who have remained loyal to Umno for better or worse.
"I and the Tangga Batu Umno committee will cleanse the party of traitors in the division. It is necessary to strengthen the Tangga Batu Umno division so that there are no enemies within," he said on Facebook.
"I will also ask Umno branch chiefs to send a report and evidence to identify any Umno members who were treacherous, disloyal or sabotaged the party in the Malacca polls," he added.
Ali lost Sungai Udang by a 530-vote majority. He received 6,259 votes to the 6,789 votes garnered by PN's Dr Mohd Aleef Yusof. Harapan received 2,035 votes while the independent candidate got 471 votes.
The defeat in the constituency where 42 percent of the registered voters were military personnel, police personnel and their spouses, came as a surprise as this cohort has traditionally been a fixed deposit for BN.
Sungai Udang is one of four states seats within the Tangga Batu parliamentary constituency. The other state seats are Pantai Kundor, Paya Rumput and Kelebang.
In last Saturday's Malacca polls, BN won a two-thirds majority after capturing 21 out of 28 seats in the state assembly. Harapan won five while PN picked up two. - Mkini
