Umno Pas Honeymoon Ending Says Party Veteran
The honeymoon period for Umno and PAS' alliance appears to be nearing its end.
One Umno veteran said the two parties were no longer as intimate as they were before.
"Yes, the relationship between PAS and Umno is not as intimate as before, especially after PAS received government positions," Umno veterans association secretary-general Mustapha Yaakub told Malaysiakini.
"People say it's like newlyweds who no longer cuddle while sleeping.
"We see and we realise that the relationship is a bit distant now, but there are no conflicts (yet)," he added.
Earlier this week, Pasir Mas MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari from PAS took a swipe at former Umno president Najib Abdul Razak for imposing conditions on support for Budget 2021.
Najib said BN's support would depend on whether the government agreed to a blanket loan moratorium extension for six months and a one-off withdrawal of up to RM10,000 from EPF.
PAS identifies itself as a member of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, which Umno is not a part of and is only an ally.
This is while the Islamic party is still in an alliance with Umno through Muafakat Nasional (MN).
Mustapha said the swipes at Najib clearly showed that PAS was defending PN leader, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
He also said that MN has also rarely met since the conditional movement control order (CMCO) was in place.
"PN has been registered but MN hasn't been registered to this day," he added.
Umno and PAS working together had led to at least six by-election victories against Pakatan Harapan.
Political observers have posited that if the two contested together in the next general election, they could wipe out Muhyiddin's Bersatu and capture Putrajaya.
However, PAS shifting allegiances could make things more difficult for Umno to take charge of the federal government again. - Mkini
