Tun M Attracts More Criticism From Umno For Calling The Party Lalat
DEPUTY Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is the latest UMNO figure to criticise former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who compared the party to a fly or ‘lalat’ in the Madani government.
Zahid today said he only respects Dr Mahathir’s age but not his opinions.
Last week, Dr Mahathir made scathing remarks against his former party, likening UMNO as ‘nothing more than a fly in the government’.
“I respect his age, but I do not respect his opinions,” said Zahid, who is also the UMNO president, when met by reporters after attending the Chinese New Year celebration organised by MCA.
The veteran politician, who will turn 100 in July, had quoted Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming who refused to engage in arguments with Umno youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh.
“According to Nga, UMNO is just a fly. Nga is a lion. This means that UMNO has accepted being a fly because it is afraid of the lion,” said Dr Mahathir.
UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi added his voice to the criticism against Dr Mahathir.
He refuted the former premier’s claim, asserting that the party is instead a ‘venomous snake’ in the unity government.
He accused Dr Mahathir of previously trying to weaken UMNO and replace it with Bersatu.
However, Puad noted that Dr Mahathir himself was later cast aside by former premier Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who expelled him from Bersatu after the party’s heavy defeat in the 2019 Tanjung Piai by-election.
UMNO veterans secretary Mustapha Yaakub also criticised Dr Mahathir for distorting Nga’s comments to insult UMNO, accusing him of harbouring a grudge against the party. — Focus Malaysia
