Several Penang traffic policemen have been suspended over an escort for a civilian and an assault on a person at a roadblock.GEORGE TOWN: Several traffic policemen in Penang have been suspended and placed on desk duty pending separate investigations into allegedly providing an escort for a private vehicle, and for an assault on a civilian at a roadblock.
Both cases arose from video clips posted online.
On Saturday, two policemen were shown in a video clip to be clearing the road for a car driven by a man believed to be the son of an MP.
Yesterday, a video clip was posted online showing traffic policemen kicking and assaulting a civilian at a roadblock at night.

Penang police chief Shuhaily Mohd Zain said today that investigations were being carried out into both cases.
He said an internal investigation into the escort case found that no orders, official or unofficial, had been issued by the state police leadership to the two traffic policemen to escort the civilian.
“The offence of carrying out duties without official instructions either from a senior officer or the task supervisor is a serious one,” he said. “We will not compromise with any police officer that disobeys the laws and standard procedures.”
Media reports said the driver of the car in the video clip was the son of Baling MP Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim.
In the Bukit Mertajam case, several traffic policemen were suspended after a 31-second video clip was posted showing a person being assaulted at a roadblock.
The dashcam video was posted on the Penang My Hometown page on Facebook.
Shuhaily said police confirmed that the incident took place at about 1.15am on May 8. The department has filed a report so that an investigation could be carried out.
He said police would seek to obtain a statement from the owner of the Facebook page.
“Meanwhile, we are (still) trying to identify the victim who has yet to reach out to us and file a police report on the incident,” he added. - FMT
