Tok Pa Defends Delay In Confidence Vote
Mustapa Mohamed says the period before Parliament reconvenes should be used to reach a consensus and put the country in a more stable situation. (Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Mustapa Mohamed has defended Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin over the decision to hold a vote of confidence in the Dewan Rakyat next month, despite the opposition demanding it to be done immediately.
The economic affairs minister, who is also known as Tok Pa, said the only reason Muhyiddin decided to delay the vote was to calm the political temperature, Berita Harian reported.
He said the period of a month before Parliament reconvenes should be used to reach a consensus and put the country in a more stable situation.
“Muhyiddin’s announcement yesterday on the plan to hold a vote of confidence in Parliament in September has calmed the situation. The announcement was well-received by most of the people.
“Malaysia’s main strength since Merdeka is its political stability. This has enabled the country to achieve glorious success in various fields,” he was quoted as saying by the Malay daily.
The Jeli MP said Malaysia has great potential to become a developed country because it has a wide range of resources and quality human capital.
“To achieve the goal of a high-income developed nation, we need to mobilise all our energy and ideas to represent various sectors in order to address the health and economic crisis that we have never experienced before,” he said, according to Berita Harian.
Mustapa also said that political stability will help attract more investments from within and outside the country.
“Domestic and foreign investments are among the catalysts for economic recovery as they can provide employment opportunities, generate income and increase exports.
“So, let us work as a team to ensure a better future for our grandchildren,” he said. - FMT
