Tmj Recalls Terrifying Moments In Bangkok Mall Shooting
Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim recounted his moments of terror when gunshots were fired at Bangkok's Siam Paragon mall in yesterday's shooting spree that killed three people and wounded five others.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) last night, Tunku Ismail said he was sitting at a nearby hotel lobby with his wife and children when they heard screams from people running away after the shots were fired.
"We carried the kids and family to safety, running to the basement with my team, and the only thing on my mind was how many shooters were there, what weapons they had and what was the situation.
"We had to be on alert and be prepared for any circumstance because all we knew at that point were the gunshots we heard," he said.
"I still have images of me telling my kids, 'everything is going to be okay. Babah and Mama are here' and telling them to get down while waiting for the car," said Tunku Ismail, also known as TMJ.
Various news outlets reported that police arrived on the scene at 5.10pm (Bangkok time) and were able to disarm the assailant, later identified as a 14-year-old boy, who has since been arrested.
Human shield
Thai national police chief Torsak Sukvimol reportedly said the suspect had used a handgun.
Tunku Ismail said he and his security team stood in front of the family members to create a human shield to protect them until they could escape from the area.
"My wife hugged all our kids, staying low and trying to calm them because they were terrified and were crying.
"I was shouting at the top of my voice to our security to get the car to the basement and get us to a secure location away from the place," he said.
Tunku Ismail said he ordered his security team to drive them to the Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok but was informed that the Singapore Embassy was nearer, and so he contacted Singapore's Consul-General in Johor for assistance.
‘Worst experience’
He said they were also met by the Malaysian ambassador to Thailand, Jojie Samuel, who also reportedly confirmed no Malaysians were involved in the shooting incident.
"Sadly, I missed the JDT game but I’m glad my family and our team are safe," said the owner of the Johor state football team.
"This is the worst experience I’ve ever gone through... protecting the lives of my children from a killer," he said.
JDT FC reportedly proceeded to defeat Thailand's BG Pathum United 4-2 in an Asian Champions League (ACL) Group I match at the BG Stadium last night, several hours after the fatal shooting.
At around 3.30am today, Tunku Ismail updated on X that his family had safely returned to Johor. - Mkini
