PETALING JAYA: A group of Shah Alam Bersatu branch leaders have made a U-turn on a threat to quit the party and dissolve 10 of the 15 branches in the Shah Alam division after branch members rejected the proposed move.
Fadzil Ahmad, the leader of the party’s Seksyen 13 branch, said some 75 representatives who attended the meeting this evening unanimously disagreed with the proposal to dissolve 10 of the 15 branches.
These representatives also urged him to not withdraw as a candidate to lead the division at the impending party polls.
Earlier today, it was reported that the Shah Alam division’s annual meeting had been called off at the eleventh hour. It was scheduled to be held this afternoon to elect the new leadership for the 2025-2027 term.
Party secretary-general Azmin Ali cited an ongoing disciplinary investigation over a commotion during the Nov 2 party elections when ordering for the meeting to be deferred.
“It’s not happening for now,” Fadzil said at a press conference, referring to the threat to quit the party and dissolve the branch. “We got the backing from the representatives and they want us to continue with our cause.”
Ten other divisions were previously unable to hold their elections on Nov 2 after they were suspended.
The suspended divisions were Hulu Langat, Kota Melaka, Tapah, Teluk Intan, Machang, Bukit Mertajam, Bukit Bendera, Tanjong, Cameron Highlands and Jasin.
Shah Alam division remains intact
Meanwhile, Shah Alam Bersatu chief Hamidi Bakar said the division would “carry on as normal” as none of its committee members had resigned or quit the party in allaying fears that the quit threat would lead to the division being dissolved.
The committee members remain with the party so the likelihood of the division being dissolved is a “non-issue”.
“For the division to be dissolved, the division’s committee members must quit. But that didn’t happen.”
Hamidi also said the division was now waiting for the party’s headquarters to provide further explanation and will wait for a new date to be set for its annual meeting. - FMT
