Akmal Should Be Bridge To Former Umno Leaders Says Division Chief

PETALING JAYA: An Umno Youth grassroots leader has suggested that his chief Dr Akmal Saleh become a “bridge” to draw former party leaders Hishammuddin Hussein, Khairy Jamaluddin and Shahril Hamdan back to the party.
Kapar Umno Youth chief Afifi Aris said the three leaders, as well as those previously sacked or suspended from the party, can come back to help the party re-establish itself and show a united front.
“I have confidence that Akmal can become a ‘bridge’ to return Hishammuddin, Shahril, Khairy and those who have been suspended or sacked to the party.
“Umno is strong because of Malay unity. Let us stop the polemics, which will only hurt Umno,” he said in a post on Facebook, urging the party to continue championing the people.
Former Umno Youth chief Khairy was previously sacked from the party for allegedly sabotaging its campaign in the 15th general election, while former vice-president Hishammuddin and information chief Shahril were suspended for six years.
Afifi’s call comes after the party’s Supreme Council rescinded the suspension of former Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman on Nov 25.
Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was also quoted as saying the party is willing to take Khairy and Hishammuddin back, but they must do as Tajuddin did and make an appeal to the party.
Last week, Khairy said his heart remains with Umno, but stressed that he does not want to return to the party just to be a “yes man”.
Hishammuddin also repeated his stance that he will not appeal as he was not given a reason for his suspension.
Akmal has said there is no such thing as yes men in Umno, which always considers the views of its members and leaders. - FMT
