PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has blamed the previous governments for the political problems facing the nation today. (Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: All parties who rejected Muhyiddin Yassin’s peace offer are a group of “power-crazy people”, says PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.
He said the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government, which has been in power for 17 months, should be given more time to resolve several problems facing the rakyat.
“The group that is rejecting the prime minister’s offer to unite the nation and move away from narrow-minded and selfish politics is made up of power-crazy people who do not care for the lives of the rakyat,” he said in a Facebook post today.
PAS is the leading supporter of the PN government, which is teetering following the loss of its majority in Parliament. Speculation is rife that Muhyiddin is set to quit as prime minister tomorrow after an audience with the King.
The Islamist party has always rejected any form of cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH), especially DAP, saying they are greedy for power.
Yesterday, Amanah vice-president Mahfuz Omar said Muhyiddin’s offer would indicate that PAS was ready to depend on DAP to continue being in the government.
Hadi said the prime minister’s offer to all parties to get their support for PN should be viewed positively because of the current difficult situation.
“Only after the situation permits can we give the mandate back to the rakyat to elect the government they want,” he said.
In his message, Hadi slammed the past governments saying their time in power was the cause of all the political problems faced by Malaysians now.
“Their long rule led the nation to be afflicted with corruption. Following that, the people changed it to a government that made various promises to a point of shaking the foundations of the Federal Constitution and questioning the supremacy of Islam. They were finally toppled,” he said in reference to the time when Barisan Nasional and PH were in power.
The PN government has come under severe criticism from all quarters, including the opposition, because it is seen as having failed to handle the Covid-19 pandemic, which has taken more than 12,000 lives and caused a prolonged economic crisis.
The opposition continues to accuse the government of using its enforcement agencies to apply pressure on politicians to get their support to remain in power.
In a last-ditch bid to remain in power, Muhyiddin on Friday sought cross-party support for his government by proposing a number of reforms, including term limits for the prime minister, equal allocations for MPs, and a law to ban party-hopping.
His offer was however rejected by opposition parties and the Umno faction which caused him to lose his majority. - FMT
