Teoh Family Slams Pm S Aide Over Double Standards On International Expert

Teoh Beng Hock’s sister has cried “double standards” after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s political secretary suggested that it is unnecessary to accede to the Teoh family’s demand for international experts to probe into his death.
Teoh Lee Lan compared this to when Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim suffered a slipped disc while in prison 20 years ago and was examined by a German medical specialist.
“On 11 March 2001, a German-based foreign specialist, Dr Thomas Hoogland, was allowed to examine Anwar’s sickness in Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
“The then health minister, Chua Jui Meng, had repeatedly claimed that the Malaysian medical system had the expertise to conduct examinations and surgeries, but the ‘Mahazalim’ Mahathir administration still allowed the examination by a foreign expert.
ADS“... You deserve a medical examination by a foreign medical expert, but Beng Hock, a lower-rank political officer, does not deserve justice, nor does the case deserve an examination by an international criminal investigation expert,” Lee Lan said in a statement.
She was commenting on Anwar’s political secretary, Chan Ming Kai, who stated in a July 21 interview on the podcast “Keywords” that international expertise is not necessary unless the police do not have the required technology.
Chan also said in the interview that the bureaucracy would find it difficult to accept, as it could be interpreted as casting aspersions on their professionalism.
‘Why could Khalid do it?’
To that, Lee Lan said the police on April 15 had said that it lacked the resources to probe into the case as it was already 15 years old then.
“Isn’t this a clear signal that the police need a helping hand? If the government has nothing to hide, why is the government scared to invite an international criminal investigation expert to probe this case?” she asked.
She also pointed out that the late former Selangor menteri besar, Khalid Ibrahim, had invited Thai forensic pathologist Dr Porntip Rojanasunan to participate in Beng Hock’s second autopsy in 2009, in which she concluded that he was likely murdered.
“Why was PKR menteri besar Khalid able to invite an international expert, but PKR prime minister Anwar was unable to do it?” she asked.
Khalid IbrahimIn 2009, Beng Hock, who was then-Selangor state executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah’s aide, was found dead after overnight questioning at Selangor MACC, which was then headquartered at Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam.
A 2011 royal commission of inquiry ruled that he was driven to suicide due to aggressive interrogation. However, in 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled his death was caused or accelerated by unlawful acts, including those of MACC officers.
On Nov 21 last year, the Kuala Lumpur High Court ordered the police to complete the investigation into Beng Hock’s death within six months.
In May, the Attorney-General’s Chambers ultimately classified the case as no further action. - FMT
