Tengku Adnan Blames Dr M For His Corruption Trial
Fresh after having his corruption case thrown out, Putrajaya MP Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor today blamed former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for setting up the charges.
“Why I was charged is no secret. I was the victim of selective prosecution because I refused to heed Dr Mahathir’s instructions. First, I was invited to join the ‘traitors’, then it became overtures before becoming an instruction.
“In the end, there were threats for me to comply. (When I refused) they trumped up charges against me,” wrote Adnan on his Facebook page today.
Adnan said had he acceded to Mahathir’s alleged request, the former would have been made a cabinet minister and the case dropped.
Adnan also alleged that as prime minister, Mahathir had also dropped criminal charges against his allies and allegedly enriched his children.
On July 16, the Court of Appeal overturned Adnan’s conviction and sentence of 12-months jail and a RM2 million fine. It was a 2-1 decision by the three-panel bench.
The lower court had found Adnan guilty of receiving RM2 million in bribes from real estate developer Chai Kin Kong.
The attorney-general’s office has vowed to appeal against the ruling.
Meanwhile, Adnan said Mahathir should be aware that RM2 million was insignificant to the former.
“When I was appointed as a deputy minister in 2000, I declared assets worth RM980 million to Mahathir himself,” said Adnan.
He added that the trial had affected his businesses both locally and abroad.- Mkini
