Tang Jie-Ee Wei took 40 minutes to defeat China’s world No 2 pair Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin 21-15, 21-14 in the final at the Adidas Arena in Paris today.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim congratulated the pair soon after their victory, calling it a National Day gift to the nation.
In a message on X, he said: “Congratulations to Chen Tang Jie–Toh Ee Wei for their impressive achievement. Thank you for working hard to bring glory to the country.”
Youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh tweeted: “This Merdeka day gold medal is extra special, it will now forever be etched in history as one of the country’s finest sporting achievements.”
Their victory, coming as Malaysia celebrated its National Day, marked a day of pride as the Jalur Gemilang was raised and the national anthem played during the victory ceremony.
It was the first championship title this season for Tang Jie-Ee Wei, who fell at the semi-final stage in five tournaments. Their last title was the Korea Open held in September 2024.
The victory effectively silenced their critics over their obvious on-court differences as they had defeated the world’s top pairs en route to becoming world champions.
The world title is the fourth career title won by Tang Jie-Ee Wei since 2022, while their head-to-head record against their rivals now stands at 3-2 in favour of the Chinese pair.
Tang Jie-Ee Wei will be awarded 14,500 points and will regain their world No 3 ranking when BWF revises the list on Tuesday. The runners-up receive 12,500 points. - FMT
