Tanah Rata Rep Three Others Under Probe For Vehicle Ban Protest

Cameron Highlands police have summoned Tanah Rata assemblyperson Ho Chi Yang and three residents for investigations under Section 5 of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
Ho, in a statement, said he was served with a notice to be present at the district's police station tomorrow (June 5) in connection with a protest held against a Pahang state government's request to ban commercial vehicles from using certain sections of Federal Route 59 in Cameron Highlands during weekends and holidays from 10am to 3pm.
"We call on all residents and farmers to urgently contact the Tanah Rata assemblyperson's office if they received a call or a notice from the police.
"We will provide lawyers to accompany you during the questioning in order to protect your rights," said Ho in a statement yesterday.
The DAP lawmaker showed several photographs showing him together with Cameron Highland residents and farmers holding a peaceful protest on June 30 against the federal ban imposed at the request of Pahang's state government, supposedly as a measure to reduce traffic congestion in the area.
"Since the ban on commercial vehicles was imposed on June 16, the traffic situation in Cameron Highlands remains.
"At the same time, the ban has negatively impacted the vegetables logistic chain in Cameron Highlands," he said.
Tanah Rata assemblyperson Ho Chi YangHo also reaffirmed the residents' constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and to raise their protest banners.
Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi previously said his ministry would only consider lifting the ban if it received a suggestion to do so from the Pahang government. - Mkini
