(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Talks are to be held next week with the Kentucky Fried Chicken and McDonald’s fast-food chains about the Menu Rahmah programme, which offers meals at RM5 each.
Domestic trade and cost of living minister Salahuddin Ayub said the Chinese Food Shops Association was also interested in being part of the programme, Bernama reported.
“We hope to continue expanding this Menu Rahmah programme,” he said, after announcing that the RM5 meals would be made available at public colleges and universities after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Initially the Menu Rahmah programme would be expanded to 20 public institutions for higher education in the Klang Valley. The programme would eventually be expanded to private colleges and universities.
Asked about the use of the “Menu Rahmah” name by a popular beverage chain, Salahuddin said he did not regard it as “manipulation” as long as there was no compromise in the quality and taste of the products.
Salahuddin, who is Pulai MP, visited Samballana Bistro in Bandar Dato Onn, which offers a set meal of chicken chop and a mint mango drink for RM5.
“This will enable low-income groups in Bandar Dato Onn and Johor Bahru to buy Menu Rahmah meals in areas not far away,” he said, according to Bernama.
“Yesterday, I was moved when a mother in Ipoh braved the rain on a motorcycle with her daughter (from Sungai Siput) to get Menu Rahmah dishes (at a Mydin supermarket in Meru).
“That really motivates me to work harder to ensure Menu Rahmah is offered at more places to provide affordable food to those in need,” he added. - FMT
