Taki Wants Malaysians To Show Up At Court Over Kelantan Syariah Case
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan called on Malaysians to show their solidarity with the Kelantan state government by turning up at court tomorrow.
The Federal Court is scheduled to deliver a verdict on the legal challenge by lawyer Nik Elin Zurina Nik Abdul Rashid of whether 18 provisions in the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code (I) Enactment 2019 are unconstitutional.
He said the public can exercise their right to show up in person and encouraged supporters to state their stand at the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya.
“It is the right of the public to go there… (We) call on people who firstly, understand the issue and secondly, have sympathy for the issue, to go out and state their stance tomorrow,” he said.
Takiyuddin was speaking at a press conference at Perikatan Nasional’s headquarters in Publika, Kuala Lumpur this evening.
The Kota Bharu MP clarified that he did not intend for supporters to fight in the court, but to show their support.
Lawyer Nik Elin Zurina Nik Abdul Rashid“We will see the decision tomorrow, whether it is unanimous or a majority (decision by the judges),” he added.
Earlier today, PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin called on all MPs, particularly those who are Muslim, to stand behind the Malay rulers in protecting the syariah legal system.
In November last year, Nik Elin said it is PAS’ right to organise demonstrations against her court case, but warned the Islamist party against manipulating the facts of the case.
She denied challenging the syariah legal system itself, explaining that the purpose of the petition was solely based on her responsibility as a legal practitioner.
Initially, she and her daughter Tengku Yasmin Natasha Tengku Abdul Rahman filed a petition at the Federal Court to challenge 20 Kelantan syariah criminal provisions but dropped two of the provisions from the challenge.
The dropped provisions were on false claims and gambling.
The case attracted consternation from certain quarters, with PN leaders declaring public rallies to protest the case.
