The victim, Zaharif Affendi Zamrie, a Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia candidate, was knocked off his motorcycle while on his way home from his school, SMK Jati, at 12.30pm today.
According to Sinar Harian, the driver was alleged to be a 44-year-old policeman who was said to have been annoyed with the loud noises from the motorcycle.
The report said the car rammed into Zaharif’s motorcycle after a 1km chase, causing him to fall off and be dragged for nearly five metres.
Eyewitnesses said the driver returned to the scene to examine the victim but fled after noticing a crowd, according to the report.
Zaharif, who was wearing his school uniform, is believed to have died at the scene.
Ipoh police are investigating the incident, Bernama reported. Perak police chief Yusri Hassan Basri was quoted as saying: “Several witnesses have lodged reports on this matter. My officers will summon a few witnesses and investigate the matter as soon as possible.”
Yusri added that the police are currently waiting for the autopsy report.
Video clips and pictures of the accident were widely shared on social media, with netizens urging the authorities to take action against the driver for causing Zaharif’s death.
One social media user posting as “KA7” said the authorities should arrest the driver “as soon as possible and punish him severely so that it will serve as a lesson for cops with bad tempers,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). - FMT
