HUMAN rights activist and lawyer Siti Kasim has hit out at three dissenting voices who opposed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s ditching of the proposed amendments to the guidelines on Muslim participation in non-Muslim festivities/funeral after they sparked nationwide outrage recently.
The first to receive her verbal bashing is UMNO Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh who disagreed with PMX’s stance on grounds that not all Muslims are fully aware of their limitations, hence those guidelines could serve as a reference source.
“So, can my Malay brethren please wise up that he regards you as fools who need to rely on guidelines,” fumed the Orang Asli advocate in a YouTube video.
“He even likened the need for the guidelines to road regulations whereby many licensed drivers still don’t fully comprehend existing laws with some even driving under the influence of alcohol.”
This is where Siti Kasim lambasted the Merlimau state assemblyman for his faulty analogy.
“I simply can’t fathom where his brain is for drawing such fallacious comparison … if I attend a non-Muslim festivity like Christmas or Thaipusam or even funeral (at a non-Muslim house of worship), what catastrophe could befall the society at large?” she wondered.
“Of course, if one breaks traffic rules, accidents will happen … on the contrary, if I show up at non-Muslim events, there’ll be no victims … even if I erred while participating in a non-Muslim celebration, the entire sin lies squarely between God and myself.
“The victim is I myself, hence the need to issue reminder doesn’t arise at all … even the Selangor ruler has objected to the said guidelines but unfortunately, you only care about portraying yourself as the defender of Islam when your ulterior motive is to control the minds of the Malays.”

Two more ‘stooges’
After the Russia-trained medical doctor, Siti Kasim next trained her gun at PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden who questioned the Madani government’s flip-flop over its guidelines for Muslims attending non-Muslim religious events.
“One wonders if his brains are located at his knees when he called on the government to free religious authorities from political interference when he himself (or even his party) is a politician.
“My fellow Malaysians, since when has Islam and the official religion of the federation been undermined by the ruling government? Or it’s only that these people are getting bolder to showcase that they’re the champion of Islam or they’re more Muslim than the previous governments
“Our politicians have to understand that our country is not a theological state but is guided by the Federal Constitution which states that no theological elements should be embedded in government policies.”
The third protagonist that Siti Kasim exposed is Kelantan mufti Datuk Mohamad Shukri Mohamad who revealed that he would reject any invitation to attend a non-Muslim funeral as the event involves rituals of other religions.
“From my humble understanding as a Muslim, it all boils down to our intention … if I attend a non-Muslim funeral, this is only to pay last respect as opposed to indulging in any form of religions ritual,” she justified.

Datuk Mohamad Shukri Mohamad“As for Shukri’s contention that it’s fine to attend a non-Muslim funeral at the deceased’s home (as opposed to a place of worship), our friend has to understand first that many non-Muslim these days prefer to stage funerals at crematorium or funeral parlours.”
She further took a jibe at the Kelantan mufti and his likes for offending the intellect of Malay Muslims by implying that the guidelines were only meany for Muslims.
Are all these people treating Muslims in Malaysia as brainless fools who can’t think for themselves? This is an insult to me as a Muslim that my life has to be controlled by these people.
If this is the case, I’m not surprised that one day, they may rise against our royalties who are deemed as having deviated from Islamic norms for the tell-tale signs are already visible.
Why not instead of harping on the dos and don’ts, they address more beneficial stuff like family violence, abandoning babies, drug addiction, tahfiz teachers raping/sodomising their pupils or other obvious sins committed by Malay Muslims.
Just leave us alone … let us pursue our faith in our own way so long as there’s no harm done to others … the more you do this, the more non-Muslims will look at Islam in a very negative way as if it’s oppressing the rights of Muslims to live their lives to the fullest.” – Focus Malaysia
