Show Proof Of Trans Sabah Gas Pipeline Reallocations Bung
Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin demanded an explanation of the state’s reallocations after the cancellation of the Trans Sabah Gas Pipeline (TSGP).
He asked to what extent the domestic gas supply for the TSGP had been allocated to strategic sectors, as cited by the government in the project’s cancellation.
“I would like to urge the government to provide clear and transparent proof that the TSGP project has actually been reallocated to the stated sectors.
“What are the specific mechanisms and projects that have been implemented using these funds? How much has been allocated to each sector?” he said in a statement on Facebook.
Reallocation done
On Feb 19, the Economy Ministry told Bung in a parliamentary written reply that domestic gas supplies from offshore Sabah allocated to the TSGP have been reallocated to meet the demands of other sectors such as electricity, industry, and petrochemicals.
Bung had asked whether the government intends to implement the project to handle electricity issues in Sabah, especially on the east coast.
The Economy Ministry denied such plans, saying that on Jan 10, 2023, the federal government handed over the power to regulate Sabah’s gas supply to the state government.
The RM4 billion project, which involved building a 662km gas pipeline, was scrapped in 2018 by the Pakatan Harapan government, but the Perikatan Nasional administration revived it in 2021.
In Bung’s statement, he questioned the federal government’s commitment to developing Sabah in line with the rest of the country.
He asked why rural villages in the state still faced inconsistent electrical supply if it were true that gas for the TSGP had been allocated to the electricity sector.
“If it is true that it is distributed to the industrial sector: To what extent has industrial development in Sabah benefited from this redistribution?
“If it is true that it is distributed to the petrochemical sector, what is the actual development of this sector that should be the driver of the state’s economy?” he asked.
The TSGP would have greatly benefited the people of Sabah, especially in developing a more efficient gas and energy infrastructure, he added. - Mkini
