(FMT) – PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has expressed shock over the naming of former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob as a suspect in a corruption probe involving hundreds of millions of ringgit in government funds.
“It happened so suddenly. At first, we thought he was just a witness, but the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission said yesterday he was no longer a witness and could be charged,” he told FMT at the Dewan Rakyat.
Tuan Ibrahim said PAS would monitor the case, as the money in question was not found in Ismail’s home.
He said they would leave it to the authorities to conduct their investigation and reiterated the principle that a person was innocent until proven guilty in court.
“As for related documents, it is his (Ismail’s) responsibility to provide them (to MACC).
“We believe in the judicial system’s ability to decide on this matter fairly,” he said.
Yesterday, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed Ismail was a key suspect in the case and that he would be called for questioning on Wednesday.
Azam also said RM170 million in cash and RM7 million in gold bars had been confiscated from a flat believed to have been used as a safe house by a suspected proxy.
The Bera MP, who was first summoned on Feb 19, had declared his assets as part of a probe into the spending of funds for promotional and publicity purposes during his tenure as prime minister from August 2021 to November 2022.
According to Azam, 13 bank accounts holding around RM2 million had been frozen.
However, he said the Yayasan Keluarga Malaysia account had not been frozen as it was an active institutional account, not a personal one.
He said Ismail’s account remains under investigation.
Azam also said 31 witnesses had been questioned in the case so far and that “at least two to three” were politicians.
