Don T Judge Ismail Sabri Until Probe Is Completed Says Anwar
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said as the investigation process is ongoing, the public should not make judgments or condemnations just yet.
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has advised the public against condemning his predecessor, Ismail Sabri Yaakob, following the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) probe into four of his senior officers.
Speaking to reporters at the Parliament building today, he urged everyone to give the authorities space to conduct their probe professionally.
“Due process must be observed. The investigation process is ongoing, so we shouldn’t make judgments yet. Let’s respect the legal process,” he said.
Earlier, MACC chief Azam Baki said Ismail was being called in as a suspect in the ongoing investigation into four senior officers linked to him.
The commission said about RM170 million in cash and 16kg of gold bars worth millions of ringgit had been seized in raids on the residences of the four officers and three other premises believed to be “safe houses”.
Anwar, however, defended MACC’s summoning of Ismail, saying the principle is to investigate all involved.
“(If you want to ask) why no ministers have been investigated, give me their names, the houses where they’re keeping their money, and I will not stop any action from being taken,” he said.
Previously, Azam said 13 bank accounts holding around RM2 million had been frozen, and Ismail’s account remains under investigation.
He said 31 witnesses had been questioned in the case so far, “at least two to three” of whom were politicians. - FMT
