Selangor Pas Lying On Unilateral Conversion Bill Incumbent Speaker

STATE POLLS | Incumbent Selangor state assembly speaker Ng Suee Lim has refuted allegations by state PAS secretary Roslan Shahir Mohd Shahir that the former had blocked a unilateral conversion bill.
Speaking to Malaysiakini yesterday, Ng said Roslan was lying and asked the latter to provide evidence to support the accusations.
“Stop spreading lies. If he continues with such accusations, I will consider taking legal action,” he said.
Ng explained that the bill was not even on the legislative sitting’s agenda at the time, and he stressed if the bill were on the agenda, he would not have been able to prevent a debate on it.
He added that the speaker must preside over state assembly sittings but he does not have the power to prevent a bill from being brought to the sitting.
“I challenge him to provide evidence to prove that I rejected (the proposed amendment for the unilateral conversion of minors).
“The state assembly was adjourned early because the sittings had been completed.
“As the speaker, my role is to preside over the state assembly and once it concludes, it adjourns as usual,” he said.
Ng said Roslan does not seem to understand how the state assembly operates, urging the Selangor PAS commissioner to study the standing order before making comments.
Ng also criticised Roslan for attempting to create fear among the Malay community to gain votes in this state election.
On Thursday night, Roslan blamed Ng for blocking the proposed amendment for the unilateral conversion of minors from being raised in the state assembly sitting.
He also urged voters to defeat Ng in Sekinchan, where the DAP lawmaker has served four terms since 2004.
Dress code in place since BN era
Roslan had further criticised Ng for setting a dress code for the state assembly sitting and reprimanding those who wore baju Melayu.
However, Ng pointed out that the dress code of only allowing baju Melayu in the sitting on Fridays has been in place since the era of the BN government.
He questioned why PAS did not oppose the dress code in the past, especially when PAS was part of the government.
“In 1999, when PAS won seats in Selangor for the first time, they did not object. This was during the BN era.
“In 2008, they were in a coalition government with us… the standing order had the same dress code but they did not raise objections. They were very quiet about this and did not make it an issue,” Ng said.
‘Take medication if unwell’
Ng also hit back at former Selangor Umno chief Noh Omar over his remarks that DAP will get the prime minister post in the future through the redelineation of electoral boundaries.
He labelled Noh’s prediction as delusional and suggest he take medication to address it.
“This government is predominantly Malay. DAP does not control it. Malays make up the majority and the redelineation of electoral boundaries has to go through the approval of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“The Malay rulers have to approve. They have the final say. Do you think it can be done easily?
“I think after Noh was sidelined and expelled from Umno, he became upset and started having delusional thoughts. If he is unwell, he should take medication,” Ng said.
Noh, a former Tanjong Karang MP, previously claimed that Putrajaya will redraw electoral boundaries favouring DAP in a ceramah to endorse his daughter Nurul Syazwani Noh.
He said this will give DAP more opportunities to win and hence more MPs, ultimately paving the way for the party to claim the prime ministership.
Nurul Syazwani is contesting as a Perikatan Nasional candidate in Permatang, a state seat under the Tanjong Karang parliamentary constituency.
She will go up against Pakatan Harapan’s candidate Mohd Yahya Sahri in a straight fight in the Aug 12 state polls. - Mkini
