Save Assumption School Petition Hits 10 000 Signatures
I am not sure why the Ministry of Education is so intent on closing down Assumption School in Butterworth. We should be enhancing our existing schools – not shutting them down!
This is a statement from a joint taskforce to save Assumption School:
On behalf of the SK Assumption stakeholders, especially for the families of the students, the announcement today by the Ministry of Education again reflects the high-handed manner in which the decision to close this historic school was made.
Even the landowner is open to discussion on any extension but the decision was made without engaging any party.
The fight is not yet over and we will use this next two weeks to do our best to seek an extension till March 2023.
This is to facilitate a better transition for our current students and also in the hope of an amicable solution for the purchase of the private land which the school sits on.
We hope Assumption School will be able to continue to serve as an education centre for our children as it has been doing for the past 89 years. An online petition at Change.org (https://www.change.org/SaveAssumptionSchool/) has garnered more than 10,000 supporters.
The Save Assumption School Joint Taskforce remains committed to ensure that the wellbeing and welfare of the students remain a top priority and seek solutions that will allow them to finish their formative primary school years without any disruptions or negative experience of feeling ‘unwanted’ by any action of the Ministry of Education.
