Sabah Reaches All Time High Of 5 082 Daily Covid 19 Cases
- NSTP file picKOTA KNABALU: Sabah's Covid-19 cases have skyrocketed again, this time breaching the 5,000-mark with 5,082 new infections. This was 708 more cases than the 4,374 cases detected yesterday, which was the previous record.
Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun raised concern over sporadic infections that have become a trend in almost all districts in Sabah.
"Sporadic infections have worryingly become the trend in almost all districts. Today 59.60 percent or 3,029 out of 5,082 cases are in this category.
"High statistics of sporadic infections mean the number of new cases will double more quickly. The state health department will face difficulties in tracking the case index for the purpose of identifying close contacts to curb wider spread," he said.
He added Kota Kinabalu recorded the highest number of new cases in Sabah with 1,086 cases and almost 60 per cent of the cases were symptomatic cases due to sporadic infections.
Masidi said two new educational institutions clusters were declared today, namely the Jalan Bandau cluster in Kota Marudu and the Jalan Sokid cluster in Ranau.
With these two new clusters, Sabah has recorded 28 clusters linked to educational institutions this year.
The number of active clusters in the state is 39.
The Jalan Bandau cluster involved residential students of SMK Kota Marudu 1 and has 96 cases so far. The index case was a male student aged 18 who tested positive on Feb 9.
The Jalan Sokid cluster involved SMK Bundu Tuhan and recorded 28 infections so far. The index case was a 24-year-old male contract worker of the school who tested positive on Feb 4.
Masidi noted that out of the 5,082 new cases, 3,225 have been fully-vaccinated, 14 had been inoculated once while 956 involved booster recipients and 887 were unvaccinated.
However, Masidi said 99.72 per cent of the total cases were under Category 1 and 2, while Category 3 had three cases, Category 4 (10) and Category 5 (one).
Sabah also registered nine fatalities today, including three in Tawau. - NST
